Poway Country Shootout – Round Up

Memorial Day weekend was officially the start of the soccer season for Carlsbad Wave FC. We fielded 10 teams at the Poway County Shootout from U8 to the U14 levels.

Out of the 10 teams we had 5 finalists and 2 champions! What a great start! Congratulations to the GU12 Black and the BU11 Black.

Our team of the tournament went to the BU11 Black, and Coach Mindes.

After a tough year last year, this tournament was the team’s first action playing11 v 11, but it didn’t show.

Depth was a Wave advantage as every player contributed across the pitch.  Scoring resulted from team play and passing and the shutouts were earned by hustle and a high compete level from all.

The finals were a physical match that yielded injuries to both squads.  Leading by one in the first half, the game broke open in the second when the Waves added its second and third goals.

The tournament ended with a ceremony that presented each player with a medal and the team with a first place trophy for the club’s display case.

We done to all the Wave teams! Next up, the Manchester Cup where we will have a total of 8 teams attending this tournament June 8th and 9th.

Wave’s Coach Michele gets Pro Soccer contract in Sweden

Coach Michele Ramirez has accepted a 6 month contract to play professional soccer for Ostersunds DFF of Sweden, who are in the 2nd Division.

Coach Michele, who currently plays for the San Diego Sea Lions has been quoted as saying she is “ecstatic” with the deal which allows her to fulfill her lifelong dream of playing Professional Soccer.

Michele joined the Wave 2 years ago to begin her career in coaching. As a dedicated coach she was in charge of the GU14 and GU10 teams, Michele also help run our Spring League and Wave Summer Camps. Although her career as a coach was going from strength to strength, Coach Michele was offered the chance to play full time pro soccer in Sweden a little over a week ago. After a turbulent few days Michele knew the offer was too good to turn down and accepted a 6 month deal.

Obviously we are sad to have lost an important member of staff and also a great person but we couldn’t be more pleased for Coach Michele and wish her the very best of luck!  There will be hundreds of fans here at the Wave supporting her all the way and as a club would always welcome her back…after a glittering career in Europe of course!

Wave Highlights 2012

2012 was a ground breaking year for Carlsbad Wave FC, fielding a record 31 teams across boys and girls (15 boys, 16 girls). We had teams competing across all levels including Premier.

We also launched our U7 Developmental Program fielding 3 teams.

As a club that is based on quality and development over quantity, we are pleased to announce we had 5 League Champions this season. Congratulations to the following teams: BU8 Black, BU12 Black, BU16 Black, GU10 Black & GU13 Black. We also had two Runners Up and another 8 teams finishing in the top 4 of their Leagues. So half the entire club finished in the top 4!

Overall, we played 427 games last season, winning 191, drew 55, losing 180. We scored an impressive 755 goals, conceding 719 goals. So we won more than we lost and we scored more than we conceded. (Click here for full stats and standings)

As we continue to grow we are expecting 40 competitive teams for the 2013 season. We have recently added another full time member to our club, with the introduction of Brad Green becoming the Assistant DOC. Brad will be managing our recreational program whilst continuing to coach at the competitive level. He will heading up new programs with in club, such as Junior Wave and our own Competitive Spring League.

As the growth continues on field, off the field, the club is dedicated to making every players experience a positive one, by increasing the education of our coaches. This year all coaches will be fully qualified, professional coaches. Our very own DOC completed his NSCAA Advanced National Course last year to add to his UFFA B license. We also are sending over 10 coaches to NSCAA and USSF coaching clinics this year. We are pleased with the progress from 2012 and are very much striving to make 2013 even better, with more teams and better coaching, always putting our players first!
